Information about the needs of different pets can be found at http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlat/satellite?pagename=RSPCA/RSPCARedirect&pg=petcare

Where else will they look for information? They could use http://www.pdsa.org.uk/managed/yrp-stage1.html

Enquiry Skills

Learners will need to ask the right questions to help them decide upon their preferred pet. These should link to the W section of their KWL grid. As they research the animal in more depth they may discover that this is not a suitable pet for them, and they may need to choose again.

Reasoning Skills

They will need to look at a number of variables including their parents’ or guardians’ views / size of house and garden / existing pets / allergies / time factor / equipment needed / cost / availability of exotics etc. They will need to take into account that cute kittens and puppies grow into demanding adult animals.

If they have one or more animals in mind, how will they choose between them? They will need to compare and contrast and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of each. They could use a Venn diagram, as on the site http://www.educationplace.biz/graphicorganizer/pdf/venn.pdf They could discuss the likelihood of them acquiring the

chosen pet.
